5 Things I have Learned as a Business Owner

As we approach b.mor’s 2 year anniversary this fall, I can’t help but reflect on the past few years and all that I have learned. Let me start by saying that I am no expert, I see each day as a fresh slate to learn even more than I knew the day before, however, coming from a family business I have some pieces of advice that I keep close to heart. Let’s take a closer look!

1.)   Remain true to yourself—I remember one of my first meetings with my business coach, Scott, he asked me to write something down that he claimed was the most important thing to remember throughout my journey. He said to me, “Always Be Bre.” You see, I have always loved helping people—it’s really the core of who I am. That’s why I started my business and every day, I wake up remembering that’s why I’m here and doing what I do. Remembering to stay true to yourself and why you started it all, really helps put things into perspective.

2.)   Align yourself with people who know more than you—This is one of those pieces of advice that my dad shared with me for years and years but, I didn’t fully appreciate it until I had my own business. I believe in the importance of strong and empowering business relationships with people who are passionate and share the same values as me. As a business owner, there’s no way that I can possibly be the expert in the room on everything within my industry. That’s why I surround myself with people who have lots of different skill sets and I collaborate with them. If I can’t provide something for my client directly, you better believe I know someone who can and I’ll gladly bring them into the project to make my client’s vision come to fruition!

3.)   Put your head down and keep working—When we begin looking around at the competition and their success, it can often induce un-necessary pressure. Instead of scrolling Insta and LinkedIn and comparing the current state of your business to theirs, focus on your own vision and personal progress. It’s healthy to be inspired by those who you look up to, but, when it starts becoming a distraction from your own work and you begin feeling uneasy—that’s when you know that it’s time to put your head down and keep working.

4.)   Celebrate small victories—I’ve grown up with my parents being my biggest cheerleaders. We have this tradition that whenever I would score a good grade on a big exam, had a sports accomplishment or even just did something kind, they would reward me with a Carvel cake that night. We still do this to this day and most recently, my husband received one after his promotion at work! In business, it’s SO important to take the time to celebrate the small victories along the way. We all have goals—big and small, but, when you work hard to achieve something, take the time to appreciate it! I’m not implying you need to go out and spend a lot of money, but, treat yourself with something simple that makes you feel alive and appreciated! Cheers to those small accomplishments that add up so quickly because you deserve it!

5.)   Be kind—It’s no secret that there’s a lot of ruthless people out there, but, you have the power to be different. Whether it’s interacting with a client, vendor or employee, always commit to spreading kindness around like confetti. Often times it’s hard for me to see the other sides’ perspective, but, when I put myself in their shoes and I’m intentional with my pursuit of understanding where they are coming from—I gain a new point of view. Pause and take a step back before responding.

These are just a few of the MANY things I have learned and continue to learn each day. I’d love to hear what you have learned! Please comment below or shoot me an email! Let’s share our experiences and rally through this journey together!
